Explore Three Arctic Islands
Highlights
- Cross the Arctic Circle at Grimsey and explore Iceland’s remote Westfjords and northern islands teeming with seabirds.
- Land on Jan Mayen’s isolated volcanic shores, a hauntingly remote and rarely visited island where raw Arctic wilderness reigns.
- Venture into Svalbard’s ice-clad wilderness in search of whales, walruses, and elusive polar bears beyond 80°N.
Set out from Reykjavík on an extraordinary voyage through three of the Arctic’s most storied island realms—Iceland, Jan Mayen, and Svalbard—each offering its own blend of dramatic landscapes, wildlife abundance, and deep polar history. Sailing in early summer, you’ll experience the Arctic during its season of awakening, when nesting seabirds cloud the skies, tundra blooms brighten the coastlines, and long days under the midnight sun extend every moment of exploration.
Your journey begins in Iceland’s Westfjords and northern reaches, where steep-walled fjords, geothermal gems, and thriving puffin colonies reveal a rugged Nordic world shaped by sea and stone. Crossing latitude 66°33’N on Grimsey Island marks your official entry into the Arctic Circle—an achievement treasured by polar travelers. From there, the adventure leaps into true isolation as you approach Jan Mayen, an island of brooding volcanic slopes and black-sand beaches visited only by scientists and the rare expedition ship. Its haunting beauty and profound solitude offer one of the Arctic’s most unforgettable landing opportunities.
Continuing northward, days at sea invite relaxation, whale-watching, and enriching lectures before you arrive in Svalbard, the fabled “Kingdom of Polar Bears.” Here, vast glaciers, ice floes, and sweeping tundra set the stage for Zodiac explorations, wildlife encounters, and the chance—ice permitting—to push beyond 80°N. In Bellsund and Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, you may witness walruses hauled out on beaches, reindeer grazing on summer tundra, and polar bears roaming the drifting sea ice in search of seals. Visits to Ny-Ålesund bring a touch of human history, connecting you with the legacy of polar exploration and modern scientific discovery.
