From 1973 to 1980, Jean-Pierre Haigneré was an officer fighter pilot in the 13th Fighter Squadron at Colmar on Mirage 5, then Squadron Leader in the SPA 100 squadron on Mirage IIIE, and won the Air Defence Cup in 1985. He was posted to the Brétigny-sur-Orge Flight Test Centre in 1981 as project test pilot in the development of the Mirage 2000N and promoted to Chief Test Pilot in 1983. His experience covers test flight time on almost every military aircraft in service in the French air force from 1970 to1985 (fighter and transport) and most categories of civil aircraft (microlights to airliners). In September 1986, Jean-Pierre Haigneré was one of seven astronauts selected by the French Space Agency (CNES) and headed the Manned Flight Division of the Hermès and Manned Flight Directorate until 1990.
In December 1990, Jean-Pierre Haigneré underwent training at the Russian Star City cosmonaut training centre near Moscow. After seven months he was selected for a 21-day mission on board the Soyouz TM-16 and Soyouz TM-17 and the Russian Mir space station (1-22 July 1993). From January 1997 to February 1998, Jean-Pierre Haigneré resumed training at Star City as the back-up astronaut for the 6th French-Russian Pegase space mission. He joined ESA’s European astronaut corps in June 1998 and was cosmonaut flight engineer for the Franco-Russian Perseus mission. It was the last international mission to the Mir space station which was allowed to deorbit and crash into the Pacific in 2001. With a flight duration of 189 days (20 February- 28 August 1999), including a spacewalk, he undertook the longest flight on record at the time for a non-Russian astronaut. Jean-Pierre Haigneré was the European astronaut with the longest experience in space during a period of 22 years, with 210 days spent on the Mir station.

Award-winning photographer and filmmaker Rich Reid has specialized in environmental and adventure photography for over three decades. On assignment with National Geographic Adventure, he cycled Alaska’s Inside Passage by ferry and explored California’s Gaviota Coast by bike and kayak. North American Nature Photography Association elected Rich as a Fellow for his significant contributions to nature photography, and he was a finalist for the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his time-lapse video documenting forest fire ecology.
His start in photography was accepting the full-time positions as photo editor for the college yearbook and daily newspaper while pursuing his business economics degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. This is where his love of the natural world and art merged to create a lifelong passion for the environment. His work to advocate the preservation of the Gaviota Coast in Southern California was highlighted in National Geographic magazine titled ‘New Park for California Coast?’ Alaska captured Rich’s imagination early in his life as a camping guide leading guests throughout the state photographing wildlife and landscapes from the temperate rain forest to the arctic tundra. He has shared his photography passion as an Alaskan tour operator, Visual Journalism instructor at Brooks Institute in California, and now as a National Geographic photographer with Lindblad Expeditions.
Rich has served on photo expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falklands, Svalbard, Galapagos, British Columbia, and the Columbia and Snake Rivers. When not aboard, Rich is using his multimedia skills to preserve open spaces with non-profit organizations and teaching students the fundamentals of garden-based learning. He is based in Ojai, California.
Natalie Hewit is an award-winning director and producer based in the UK. She has been making prime-time documentaries for major terrestrial and international broadcasters -including the BBC and National Geographic – for more than a decade. Her work has received widespread industry recognition and critical acclaim including a Royal Television Society Award for the BBC series Forensics: The Real CSI, and nominations for a Grierson Award and a BAFTA for the Channel 4 documentary Surviving Covid. With human narratives at their core, her projects have taken her to numerous remote and highly challenging locations including an expedition into the Canadian Yukon for the BBC series Operation Goldrush with Dan Snow.
Her directorial debut saw her spend 3 months filming Antarctica: Ice Station Rescue at the Halley VI Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf for the BBC’s prestigious Horizon science series, which earned her a nomination for “Best Documentary” at the Broadcast Awards. Her most recent project, Endurance, marked her second visit to Antarctica, where she documented the expedition to find the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance in the toughest conditions on the planet.
In March 2023, Oscar-winning co-directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi joined Natalie on the team to bring Endurance to audiences for National Geographic Documentary Films. Natalie’s work has gained multiple 5-star reviews and been deemed “Essential” by the Financial Times and “haunting and powerful” by The Guardian. She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has sat on awards juries for the Director’s Guild of America and grant panels for the Explorer’s Club.
