Antarctica's Whale Season
Highlights
- Experience peak whale season as Humpbacks, Minkes, and Orcas feed on krill in the Antarctic Peninsula’s icy bays
- Explore the South Shetland Islands, where volcano-sculpted landscapes meet penguins, seals, and calving glaciers
- Navigate the legendary Drake Passage with expert guides, citizen science, seabirds, and tales of polar explorers
Antarctica’s Whale Season is a journey into the Southern Ocean at its most alive, tracing a classic route from Ushuaia across the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. These storied polar waters are famed for dramatic ice-filled channels, active volcanic landscapes, and an extraordinary concentration of wildlife drawn here by the richness of the Antarctic ecosystem.
Timed for late summer, this voyage coincides with peak feeding season, when whales gather in abundance to feast on krill before their long migrations north. The reward is frequent, often close encounters with Humpback whales, alongside sightings of Orcas and Minkes, while penguins and seals crowd the shores under softer light and more navigable ice conditions.
Days at sea are enriched by expert-led lectures, wildlife spotting from deck, and participation in a pioneering Citizen Science program, while shore days bring Zodiac cruises, landings, and gentle hikes through penguin colonies, along glacial beaches, and past historic sites and research stations. Crossing the Antarctic Convergence and sailing the Drake Passage adds a sense of true expedition, echoing the routes of history’s great polar explorers.
This is a voyage that leaves guests exhilarated and deeply connected to the wild pulse of Antarctica, carrying home the quiet thrill of having witnessed one of Earth’s greatest natural spectacles. Ideal for wildlife lovers, first-time Antarctic explorers, and those drawn to meaningful adventure, it offers the rare satisfaction of being present in a place and moment that few ever experience.
