Svalbard & The Arctic Circle
Highlights
- Venture deep into the shifting pack ice north of Spitsbergen in search of polar bears, bearded seals, and elusive ivory gulls.
- Witness the awe-inspiring 180-kilometer glacier front of Bråsvellbreen, where summer meltwater cascades down towering walls of ice.
- Visit the 17th-century whaling sites Smeerenburg and Gravneset, where the powerful legacy of early Arctic explorers still lingers.
This eight-day High Arctic voyage sails round-trip from Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town, into the raw and wildlife-rich realm of Svalbard. Aboard the elegant Aqua Lares, you’ll explore a land shaped by ice and steeped in exploration history, from dramatic seabird cliffs and walrus haul-outs to the storied remains of 17th-century whaling settlements. At places like Smeerenburg and Sorgfjorden, the echoes of early Dutch and French expeditions linger among tundra and weathered blubber ovens, adding a powerful human narrative to this remote polar wilderness.
Sailing in summer brings the Arctic to life. Endless daylight casts a golden glow over basalt cliffs teeming with tens of thousands of Brünnich’s guillemots at Alkefjellet, while reindeer graze the tundra beneath towering bird colonies at Alkehornet. The seasonal melt transforms glacier fronts into dramatic walls streaked with waterfalls, most spectacularly along Bråsvellbreen, one of the longest ice faces in the Northern Hemisphere. In the drifting pack ice north of Spitsbergen, the edge of the frozen world becomes your frontier—prime habitat for polar bears, bearded seals, and ivory gulls.
Each day balances immersive shore landings and Zodiac cruises with refined comfort on board. You might quietly approach a walrus haul-out at Torellneset, scan the ice edge for the Arctic’s apex predator, or feel the rush of a polar plunge in frigid waters. On board, expert guides enrich your journey with insights into Svalbard’s wildlife, geology, and polar heritage, deepening every sighting and every landscape.
By journey’s end, you will have ventured into true expedition territory—into the pack ice itself, a region few travelers ever reach. You’ll leave with a profound sense of accomplishment and connection: having stood beneath towering seabird cliffs, traced the paths of early Arctic whalers, and sailed along colossal glaciers in one of the planet’s last great wildern...
