Highlights

  • Stand astride the Arctic Circle on wildlife-rich Grímsey, where puffins, razorbills, and Arctic terns whirl above basalt cliffs.
  • Explore remote Jan Mayen’s otherworldly volcanic slopes and 17th-century whaling relics beneath towering Mt. Beerenberg.
  • Pursue the shifting pack ice under the midnight sun in search of bowheads, polar bears, harp seals, and Spitsbergen’s giant whales.

Set off from Akureyri on a voyage that stitches together some of the Arctic’s most enigmatic outposts—Grímsey, Jan Mayen, and the wild western reaches of Spitsbergen—each destination carrying its own blend of natural spectacle, cultural echoes, and frontier mystique. Crossing the Arctic Circle places you in a world defined by seabird-crowded cliffs and boundless daylight, a rare seasonal privilege that sharpens every horizon and invites long, lingering hours of wildlife watching.

As you push north under the midnight sun, the ocean becomes a stage for cetaceans: humpbacks, fin and minke whales, and even elusive blue whales or orcas. Jan Mayen rises like a myth from the sea, crowned by the glaciated cone of Mt. Beerenberg. Here you can wander moss-laden volcanic slopes, visit the weather station, and stand amid the remains of a centuries-old Dutch whaling outpost—a haunting reminder of early polar enterprise. Farther on, the ship follows the shifting ivory edge of the pack ice, where bowheads and polar bears patrol a stark, silent frontier few travelers ever glimpse.

Arriving in the storied fjords of Spitsbergen, the Arctic reveals its softer side: reindeer grazing under bird-cluttered cliffs, Arctic foxes patrolling the slopes, and walruses heaped on shingle beaches. Zodiac cruises, shore landings, and expert-led talks immerse you in a world where geology, biology, and human history weave together in spectacular fashion.

This journey is crafted for travelers who crave remote horizons, rare wildlife encounters, and the thrill of reaching high latitudes on a true expeditionary route. Expect to feel both humbled and uplifted—whether by the scale of Beerenberg or by the quiet moment when a whale surfaces in the stillness of a sunlit midnight. By the time you disembark in Longyearbyen, you’ll leave not just with remarkable photographs, but with the deep satisfaction of having ventured into an Arctic wilderness few ever experience.
