Iceland & East Greenland - Under the Northern Lights
Highlights
- Sail East Greenland’s epic fjords, where 2,000m peaks, vivid tundra, and drifting icebergs frame a surreal Arctic adventure.
- Experience the culture and resilience of Greenland’s Inuit in remote Ittoqqortoormiit, the east coast’s most isolated village.
- Spot Arctic wildlife in its element—musk oxen, foxes, reindeer, eiders, and whales gliding through Greenland’s icy, clear waters.
Set out on a spectacular voyage from the land of fire to the land of ice, beginning in Iceland’s geothermal wonderland before crossing the Denmark Strait to explore the untouched majesty of East Greenland. From the thunderous cascade of Dynjandi waterfall to the fjord-laced wilderness of Greenland’s remote coastline, this itinerary offers a rare opportunity to witness nature on a scale few ever will.
Timed for late Arctic summer, when the tundra blooms with color and wildlife is most active, this journey unveils East Greenland in its most accessible and vivid state. As sea ice retreats, deep fjord systems become navigable, revealing towering glacier-carved cliffs, vast drifting icebergs, and landscapes etched with the stories of ancient Inuit cultures. The longer daylight hours and milder weather invite outdoor adventure, whether you’re hiking past musk oxen tracks on flowering tundra, cruising beneath sculpted icebergs, or visiting the vibrant Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, a place few travelers ever reach.
Onboard, expert-led lectures and informal chats with your expedition team enhance your understanding of the Arctic’s ecology, geology, and cultural heritage. Off ship, you’ll embark on Zodiac excursions to geological marvels, wildlife-rich valleys, and historical sites—from centuries-old Thule ruins to remote hunter cabins. This expedition also opens the door to citizen science opportunities, contributing to global understanding of climate and wildlife shifts in a changing Arctic.
Expect moments of deep wonder and disarming solitude—gazing at an iceberg the size of a cathedral, or hearing nothing but the gentle crackle of brash ice in a silent fjord. This Kayaking Program was created by kayakers for kayakers! Our program style offers the chance to develop and enhance your skills and to connect with our expert guides and your fellow Expeditioners. Participating with the small group through your voyage will minimize wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts and maximize time on the water.
All of our Expert Guides are professional kayak guides, who have led trips around the world, specialize in the Polar Regions and have been chosen for their passion for the sport. Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit. You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.
