Embark on a 12-day expedition into New Zealand’s seldom-seen southern wilderness—where windswept Subantarctic Islands collide with the towering drama of Fiordland’s ancient fjords. Departing from Queenstown, your journey by sea brings you face to face with some of the most ecologically rich and geologically fascinating regions in the Southern Hemisphere—accessible only by expedition ship and protected by some of the strictest conservation laws in the world.

The voyage begins with the Subantarctic Islands—UNESCO-listed and celebrated for their astonishing biodiversity. On predator-free Campbell and Enderby Islands, walk among Southern Royal Albatrosses and Hooker’s Sea Lions, and marvel at blooming megaherbs that paint the landscape with surreal color. Zodiac cruise the forested shores of The Snares, where tens of thousands of seabirds—including endemic Snares Crested Penguins—nest in dense colonies above wave-battered cliffs. Every island brings a new chapter of ecological recovery and rediscovery, from the flightless teal of Campbell Island to the songbird-filled canopies of Ulva Island.

As your ship heads north, you’ll explore the untouched fjords of Fiordland, New Zealand’s most remote mainland region. Here, waterfalls cascade down moss-laden cliffs, while Bottlenose Dolphins, Fiordland Crested Penguins, and rare seabirds thrive in pristine waters. With multiple days to explore Doubtful and Dusky Sounds, Zodiac excursions, interpretive hikes, and optional helicopter flights offer unparalleled access to this cinematic landscape where Captain Cook once anchored.

This voyage is only possible during the Austral summer, when calm seas and extended daylight hours unlock access to these far-flung wonders. On board, naturalist lectures and informal wildlife viewing deepen your understanding of the region’s unique ecology and rich human history—from wartime coastwatchers and castaways to ancient Māori legends.
