Polar Odyssey between Northeast Greenland & Spitsbergen
Highlights
- Explore Scoresby Sound, the world’s largest fjord, where towering peaks and giant icebergs form a pristine Arctic landscape.
- Visit Ittoqqortoormiit, a remote Inuit settlement, and experience rare cultural encounters rooted in enduring hunting traditions.
- Navigate shifting sea ice to discover Northeast Greenland National Park’s vast, wildlife-rich Arctic wilderness.
This remarkable 17-day expedition charts a true polar frontier, sailing from Reykjavík across the Greenland Sea and into the remote, ice-choked wilderness of East and Northeast Greenland, before continuing onward to the dramatic archipelago of Spitsbergen and ending in Tromsø—the gateway to the Arctic.
From the outset, this voyage immerses you in regions defined by extremes: vast, glaciated fjords, drifting pack ice, and some of the most isolated human settlements on the planet. In East Greenland, the colossal landscapes of Scoresby Sound and the cultural richness of Ittoqqortoormiit reveal both the raw beauty of the Arctic and the enduring traditions of its people. Further north, the immense Northeast Greenland National Park—larger than many countries—offers a glimpse into one of Earth’s last true wildernesses, where wildlife roams freely across a frozen expanse seldom visited by humans.
Timing is everything in the Arctic, and voyages like this—typically in late summer—benefit from more navigable sea ice, extended daylight, and peak wildlife activity. This is when polar bears patrol the ice edge, whales traverse nutrient-rich waters, and migratory birds fill the skies, creating a dynamic and ever-changing natural spectacle.
Life on board the technologically advanced Le Commandant Charcot is as enriching as the landscapes outside. Equipped for true polar exploration, the ship ventures where few others can, offering guests the rare chance to sail deep into the ice floe itself. Days are filled with expert-led lectures, opportunities to contribute to citizen science, and Zodiac excursions that bring you face-to-face with glaciers, wildlife, and remote shorelines. Whether cruising silently past sculptural icebergs or stepping ashore in rarely visited landing sites, each moment feels like genuine discovery.

Reykjavík
Iceland’s capital stretches along the edge of a vast bay in the west of the country. Perlan, the “Pearl of Reykjavík”, a museum located on ’Oskjuhlið hill, offers a panoramic view of the lush, green landscapes. A little further, one can easily spot the signpost showing the way to the evangelical Hallgrímskirkja church, and to the historical centre where one can stroll along the Skólavördustígur and the Laugavegur, two lively streets with charming small shops.
